But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
James 4: 6,10
So I was listening to the radio this morning, and they brought up James 4, verse 10: “Humble yourself before the Lord, and he will lift you up. “. I was thinking about how this first impacts everyone, both believers and non-believers. Even non-believers can be humbled by different aspects or people in their lives. But I believe that, regardless of who you are and what you believe, God utilizes and uses different people, events, and situations in order to help us to learn and grow. Being humble is just another word at least for me, meaning to grow.
Obviously, the radio personality asked, “Are you humble? “It was a trick question: If you say yes, are you really that humble?, and if you say no, are you really that humble… Lol. There never seems to be a right answer.
As a mother of four, I find that God humbles me through my children. Sometimes they do silly things that may embarrass me or knock me off my pedestal, and sometimes just their gentleness and their child innocence will bring me back down to earth. God wants us to not be proud or boastful. He wants us to care for the smallest and put ourselves last. I struggle with this daily. I always want to just get what I need to get done and worry about the rest later. I have to remember that others have to come before me and that I need to show Jesus and his love for others to humble myself to teach my children how to humble themselves. As a mother or a parent, we have to remember that God is using us as examples by what we demonstrate our children will learn. My daughter mimics me all the time. I’ll say something to her and a little while later she’s repeating it right back to her siblings I have to remember I need to say things with love not anger, and frustration, and I have to take that step back and say what would God say in the situation. That is a quick way to be humbled is when you hear your words being repeated back and you have to say oh Lord, forgive me. I pray that God forgives me for my quick tongue and shows me how to better relay what I want my children to do and how I want my children to act, I pray that he helped me show them through my actions and my words. I pray I might be more like Jesus every day. Amen.
